About Choice Theory
Choice Theory is the foundation and underlying theory upon which all of our programs are based. Originated by Dr. William Glasser, it contends that all of our motivation and behaviors are an attempt to meet out specific wants and universal human needs of:
- Love & Belonging
- Self worth / power
- Freedom & Independence
- Fun and enjoyment
- Survival and health
Although these needs are not in a hierarchy (as in Maslow's development model of motivation), in practice the two most important needs are "the need to love and be loved" (Love & Belonging) and the (self worth/power) need to feel that we are "worthwhile to ourselves and others" (Glasser, 1965).
Choice Theory maintains that we are internally motivated (to try and fulfill our 'wants' and 'needs') and that our behavior is 'total' and made up of four (interconnecting) 'components' of acting, thinking, feelings and physiology. Each one always accompanies the other three components. Acting and thinking are predominately voluntary; feelings and physiology are involuntary and can only be changed by changing how we act and think. Additionally, Glasser states that "all of our significant conscious behavior - that is, all behaviors that have anything directly to do with satisfying basic needs, are chosen" (Glasser, 1998) and that the choices we make are perceived by us to be the best behaviors available to us at that point in time; even though we may regret such choices Milli-seconds later, and / or other people might perceive such choices to be ineffective, negative or antisocial etc.
It follows then that we have responsibility for the behavioral choices we make and this is something that we emphasize emphatically and skilfully in both our teaching and practice. Irrespective of the past we can make more effective and need-satisfying choices both today and in the future. - and this truth can set us free! Choice Theory is offered to replace what Glassier refers to as 'external control psychology', the present psychology of most of the world. This forcing, punishing psychology is destructive to every kind of relationship (be it between individuals, groups or even nations) and counterproductive to the quality and well being of virtually any kind of organization or enterprise. Choice Theory offers an 'internal control psychology' that enhances any kind of relationship, including the one we have with our self.
About reality therapy
Reality Therapy (RT) is principally a method of counseling, based on Choice Theory(CT), that is highly focused, interactive and applicable to almost every area where counseling or psychotherapy is practiced. Additionally, the practical skills, ideas and approaches of Reality Therapy have also been successfully applied to many other areas, including coaching, mentoring, managing, teaching, supervising, relationships and self development (most notably in the areas of stress management, anger management and self esteem programs).
The core of Reality Therapy is the idea that regardless of what has 'happened' to us, what we may have done, or how our needs may have been unmet or violated in the past, to be happy and effective we must live and plan in the present. It enables people to clarify how they can best fulfill their needs; to evaluate their own behaviors and make more effective and need satisfying choices, both now and in the future and, importantly, without infringing the needs of others.
Due to the emphasis of "Choice Theory in the practice of Reality Therapy" and how the ideas / concepts are so readily absorbed by clients, the teaching of 'Choice Theory' to the clients is now regarded as an essential part of Reality Therapy. Thus, clients are helped to meet their needs more effectively.
It has been said that Choice Theory is the tracks, and Reality Therapy is the train
The practice of Reality Therapy is an ongoing process consisting of two major components -
1. Creating a trusting environment / relationship
2. Using procedures and techniques that enable the person / client to create positive change. The procedures that we teach in our workshops are those developed by Dr. Bob Wubbolding (ex-Director Of Training for the William Glasser Institute) and referred to as the 'WDEP system'. This has proven to be not only an excellent 'teaching tool' but also something that can be taught to clients as an aid to self-development as well as personal problem solving.
The ideas of CT and RT are practiced worldwide, and there are CT/RT Associations in numerous countries such as Canada, Australia, New Zealand, UK, Kuwait, Japan, Ireland, Singapore, Columbia, South Africa, Croatia, Slovenia, Malta, and South Korea, as well as in the United States and here in Iran. The 'International Journal For Reality Therapy' publishes papers written by practitioners and academics on all aspects Choice Theory, Reality Therapy and Lead Management
About lead management
The William Glasser Institute Iran is an academic body established in 2007 to help plan and co-ordinate courses in Reality Therapy, Choice Theory psychology, Quality School Education, Lead Management and Personal Well-being. Our goal is to help people improve the quality of their professional and personal lives and relationships through the promotion and teaching of positive psychology of Choice Theory and its areas of application.
Lead Managment
Lead managers apply their understandings of Choice Theory to working with others in the workplace, home or community. Lead management focuses on the relationships between people with quality at its heart. Lead managers continually work on the system to maintain an environment where coercion is minimized and the conditions of quality are maximized. Lead management is applicable in any culture. A choice theory program in Japan has been successfully training managers for over 20 years in the principles and applications of Lead management.
The Lead-Manager needs to identify:
- Who they are
- What they stand for
- What they will do
- What they won’t do
- What they will ask people to do
- What they won’t ask people to do
When challenged with a problem they don’t ask “Who is to blame?” they ask, “What is the problem and how do we solve it?”
Lead Managers:
Engage and encourage the workers in ongoing honest discussion of both the cost and quality of the work that is needed for the organisation to be successful.
Clearly define and regularly review the quality (of service or product) that is needed.
Promote self evaluation rather than external evaluation.
Facilitates the constant improvement needed for quality by providing the best tools and a trained, friendly, connective atmosphere in which to work.
About quality schools
In his book, The Quality School: Managing Students Without Coercion, Dr. Glasser explains how schools using lead management rather than boss management principles, could create Glasser Quality School.
The principal’s role in facilitating the beginning process is most crucial. He/she reads The Quality School, Choice Theory: A New Psychology of Personal Freedom and Every Student Can Succeed. He/She then leads the staff in discussions of the material and its application to raise the awareness of the teachers and students.
To become a Glasser Quality School, the principal plays a vital role throughout the four phases of implementation, including intensive week training and teaching students and parents Choice Theory. It is necessary that at least a core group of people completes the Institute Certification process through an Advanced Practicum, and hopefully, a Certification Week. What is considered a “core” group is defined on an individual school basis in consultation with the Institute instructor
Stage 1: basic intensive training (duration: 4 days • fee: 1.5 million Toman • prerequisite: none required)
The Basic Intensive Training is the first step in the certification process and is taught by William Glasser International-approved faculty.
Stage 2: basic practicum (duration: 6 months* • fee: 1.6 million Toman • prerequisite: completed basic intensive training)
The Basic Practicum is the second step of your journey in the certification process. You have gained basic knowledge and skills in your Basic Intensive Training. During the Basic Practicum, you will deepen your understanding of the newly acquired skills from the Basic Intensive Training. The practicum consists of a minimum of 30 hours, of which 15 hours must be of face-to-face direct contact with your Practicum Supervisor.
If a participant has attended a 3-day Intensive Training of 20 hours, more practicum hours may be necessary prior to attending the Advanced Intensive Training.
* Maybe longer depending on the readiness of the participant to move on to the next stage.
Stage 3: advanced intensive training (duration: 4 days • fee:1.7 million toman • prerequisite: completed basic practicum)
The Advanced Intensive Training is the third step in the process leading to Certification which brings participants to a higher level of experience and understanding of Dr Glasser’s work and ideas.
Stage 4: advanced practicum (duration: 6 months* • fee:1.8 million toman • prerequisite: completed advanced intensive training)
You gained more in-depth knowledge and refined your skills in the Advanced Intensive Training. The Advanced Practicum consists of at least 30 hours, of which 15 hours must be of face-to-face direct contact with your Practicum Supervisor.
If a participant has attended a 3-day Intensive Training of 20 hours, more practicum hours may be necessary prior to attending the Advanced Intensive Training.
* Maybe longer depending on the readiness of the participant to move on to the next stage..
Stage 5: ct/ rt certification (duration: 4 days • fee:3 million toman • prerequisite: completed advanced practicum)
The final step in the process leading to CTRTC is the attendance at Certification training. This part of the program brings participants together to gain new knowledge and demonstrate the knowledge and skills learned throughout the previous trainings. Together with people from various backgrounds, you will share experiences and short presentations, and learn new ways and ideas to implement and teach Choice Theory, Reality Therapy and Lead Management. You will be the recipient of a certificate and receive the designation of Choice Theory/ Reality Therapy Certified (CTRTC).

Who should attend?
The study of Choice Theory, Reality Theory and Lead Management has been proven useful to many individuals in enriching their personal lives.
In the professional setting, our trainings are designed for professionals who are engaged in a people-oriented work environment. Among our students are counselors, teachers, administrators, social workers, nurses, therapists, probation officers and business leaders ~ anyone who manages, teaches, counsels or supervises others.
Much as the concepts of Choice Theory, Reality Theory and Lead management are not difficult to learn, supervised training is required in order to achieve a good practical grasp of the approach.
